Lot 115:
Description
A vintage Remington UMC .50-70 Government ammunition box, containing 20 rounds of central fire cartridges. The aged, partially open cardboard box features green paper labels with black text and illustrations, prominently displaying “Remington UMC” and “Union Metallic Cartridge Co.” branding, with “Bridgeport, Conn. U.S.A.” as the manufacturer’s location. The labels indicate “FOR GOVERNMENT AND OTHER RIFLES,” “20 CENTRAL FIRE CARTRIDGES,” and specify a “450 GRS. BULLET.” Inside, the box contains 20 brass-cased cartridges with lead bullets, one of which is lying on its side. The cartridges exhibit various headstamps including “U.M.C. 50-70 GOVT,” “DIXIE 50-70 GOVT,” and “REM-UMC 50-70,” indicating a mixed assortment rather than a uniform, factory-packed lot.
Condition report:
The box is in poor to fair condition, exhibiting significant wear, discoloration, tears, and losses to the paper labels, consistent with considerable age and handling. The cartridges generally appear to be in fair to good condition, showing visible tarnishing and patina on the brass casings.
