A Pair of Cast Iron 'Aunt Jemima' and Companion Figural Coin Banks
Description
A pair of cast iron figural coin banks, depicting racially stereotypical caricatures of African Americans, commonly referred to as ‘Aunt Jemima’ and a companion male figure Uncle Ben. The male figure is dressed in a red jacket, yellow trousers, and a white shirt with a yellow bow tie, holding a black top hat. The female figure wears a red headscarf with white polka dots, a red top, and a white apron. Both figures are constructed from cast iron. Each figure features a coin slot on its back; the female figure also has a coin retrieval screw on her lower back.
Condition report:
Both figures exhibit significant paint loss, chipping, and surface abrasions, exposing the dark metal underneath. Visible mold seams are present on both figures. Overall fair condition consistent with age and material.
