Remington Percussion Lock Rifle, Ilion, NY, Pat. 1871
Description
An American percussion lock rifle by Remington, featuring a heavy octagonal steel barrel marked “REMINGTONS ILION NY U.S.A.” and “PAT. JUL. 25. 71”. The dark hardwood stock is embellished with numerous decorative brass tacks, a patchbox, and two distinct lighter metallic inlays, one depicting a stylized eagle and another a five-pointed star. The rifle is fitted with brass or copper furniture, including a crescent buttplate and trigger guard. The hammer does not hold in battery.
Condition report:
The rifle presents with significant age and use. Metal surfaces exhibit a dark, even patination with minor pitting on the barrel. The wooden stock shows visible wear, scratches, and some minor splits or repairs consistent with its age. The hammer mechanism is faulty and does not hold in battery.
