Description
This item comprises a vintage cardboard box containing twenty .45-70-405 Government centerfire rifle cartridges. The box is adorned with multiple green and off-white paper labels that prominently identify the contents as “.45-70-405 GOVERNMENT CARTRIDGES,” described as “EXTRA HEAVY, SOLID HEAD, CENTER FIRE,” and “U. S. GOVERNMENT STANDARD FOR TARGET USE,” further specifying “.45 Caliber, 70 Grs. Powder, 405 Grs. Bullet.” Manufacturing is attributed to both “THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO., Bridgeport, Conn., U.S.A.” and “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO., NEW HAVEN, CONN., U. S. A.,” with the visible cartridges displaying corresponding “U.M.C. CO.” and “W.R.A. CO.” headstamps. Safety warnings, such as “Never prime a loaded shell,” are also present.

The cardboard box and its paper labels exhibit significant signs of age and handling, including pervasive discoloration, staining, creasing, and minor tearing. The brass-cased cartridges with lead bullets appear complete and generally well-preserved, displaying a natural patina consistent with their apparent vintage.
