Lot 1198:
Description
This lot features two vintage collector boxes of .22 Short R.F. (Rim Fire) ammunition, manufactured by Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. in Bridgeport, Conn., U.S.A. Dating to an early 20th-century production period, likely post-1912, these boxes present as historical examples of early Remington UMC packaging. The box on the left, adorned with an orange-red plaid pattern, is labeled “.22 SHORT R.F. SMOKELESS 50 CARTRIDGES” and specifies “GREASED” ammunition, noting it is “SPECIALLY ADAPTED FOR FINE […] AND TARGET SHOOTING, ALSO FOR SPORTING PURPOSES.” Upon inspection, this box contains a non-uniform assortment of loose lead shot mixed with various .22 caliber cartridges, inconsistent with its original “50 CARTRIDGES” label. The right box, featuring a primary yellow and red design, is labeled “.22 SHORT R.F. 50 CARTRIDGES” with “29 GRS. BULLET” and indicates the use of “UMC TRADE MARK LESMOK POWDER.” This box contains a quantity of .22 Short R.F. cartridges. The total quantity of ammunition across both boxes is 74 rounds. The cartridges exhibit visible tarnish and oxidation on their copper-cased lead bullets and brass casings.
Condition report:
Both rectangular boxes are in poor to fair condition, showing significant wear, creasing, tears, fading, and extensive paper loss across their decorative paper labels. The contents of the left box are mixed, containing loose lead shot and various .22 caliber cartridges. The cartridges in the right box exhibit visible tarnish and oxidation on their copper-cased lead bullets and brass casings.
