A Winchester Model 1873 Lever-Action Repeating Rifle, .44 caliber
Description
A late 19th-century Winchester Model 1873 Lever-Action Repeating Rifle, .44 caliber, constructed from dark wood for the stock and forend, and predominantly ferrous metals for the barrel, receiver, and operating lever. The barrel is marked “WINCHESTER’S-REPEATING ARMS, NEW HAVEN CT.” and “KING’S-IMPROVEMENT PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860.” The receiver bears the markings “MODEL. 1873” and the serial number “738568 A”. A brass or bronze lifting block is visible within the receiver. The buttstock is incised with the initials “F.W.S.” and also exhibits fainter, dotted initials elsewhere.
Condition report:
The firearm exhibits a worn, patinated condition, with significant loss of original finish on metal surfaces, minor pitting, and numerous scratches, dents, and areas of finish wear on the wooden components, consistent with its age and use.
