Description
A mid-19th century American military-style breech-loading carbine, identified as a Burnside 4th Model Percussion Carbine, chambered in .54 caliber. The firearm features a hammer-fired percussion mechanism and a distinctive lever-operated action. It is constructed of a dark-patinated steel or iron barrel, receiver, and fittings, paired with a dark-stained hardwood stock and forend. Visible markings include “BURNSIDE RIFLE Co. / PROVIDENCE R.I.” on the left side plate, “CAST-STEEL 1862” on the barrel, and the serial number “11768” prominently displayed on the receiver and breech block. The breech block also shows “PATENTED / MARCH 25 1856.” Sling swivels are present at the buttstock and front barrel band.
Condition report:
Antique, used condition. Metal components exhibit a dark, aged patina with areas of surface wear and light pitting. The wooden stock shows numerous dents, scratches, and minor losses consistent with age and field use. Mechanical functionality not tested.
