Description

A vintage box of 50 rounds of Winchester Repeating Arms Co. .38 Smith & Wesson Solid Head Central Fire ammunition, dating to the late 19th century. The cardboard box, manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven, Conn., U.S.A., features a heavily faded green paper label on the lid depicting an antique revolver, characteristic of the ‘Picture Box’ style. The label states “50 CARTRIDGES, SOLID HEAD, 38 CALIBER Central Fire” and “Expressly for SMITH & WESSON New 38 Cal. Central Fire Revolver.” A side panel is stamped “38 S. & W. C. F.” The interior of the box contains an informational label specifying “WINCHESTER PRIMER No. 1½” for reloading. The box contains fifty metallic cartridges. Each brass-cased, lead-bullet cartridge bears “W.R.A. Co.” and “38 S. & W. C. F.” headstamps.

Condition report:

The cardboard box exhibits significant wear, including tears, discoloration, and paper loss consistent with age. The green paper label on the lid is heavily faded. The metallic cartridges appear aged but are largely intact.
