A Vintage Box of Winchester 32-40 Center Fire Cartridges, 18 Live Rounds
Description
A vintage box of Winchester 32-40 Center Fire Cartridges. Containing 18 live rounds, this vintage cardboard box was manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven, Connecticut. The box features multiple paper labels displaying “WINCHESTER,” “TRADE MARK,” “32-40 CALIBER CENTER FIRE CARTRIDGES,” and originally indicating “20” rounds. Additional text specifies “165 Grs. Grooved Bullet, 40 Grs. POWDER,” and states the cartridges are “ADAPTED TO WINCHESTER, MARLIN AND BALLARD RIFLES.” A partial patent date “Pat Dec. 14, 188…” is visible, suggesting a late 19th or early 20th-century period. A “CAUTION” regarding Winchester manufacture is printed on the lower label, alongside a partially visible “Winchester Repeating Arms Co.” signature. The cartridges inside are brass-cased with lead bullets, bearing headstamps such as “W.R.A. CO. 32-40 WCF” or “WINCHESTER 32-40,” with some appearing to be “WESTERN” branded. The cartridges appear to be unfired.
Condition report:
The cardboard box is in heavily deteriorated condition, exhibiting significant fading, tearing, and loss of labels, with frayed and crumbling edges. The 18 live rounds show varying degrees of tarnishing and discoloration consistent with age but appear to be unfired.
