Lot 1053:
Description
A Moore’s Patent No. 1 Derringer, chambered in .41 Rimfire, manufactured by W.W. Marston & Co. and patented May 26, 1863. This antique single-shot pistol features a distinctive curved bird’s head grip and an octagonal barrel. The frame and grip are constructed from brass or bronze, extensively decorated with floral scrollwork engraving and a checkered pattern on the butt. The steel barrel, likely blued or browned, also exhibits scrollwork and an arrow motif, and is clearly marked “W.W. MARSTON & CO. NEW-YORK” and “PATENTED MAY 26 1863” on its top surface, with the serial number “4865” visible underneath.
Condition report:
The firearm presents in aged condition, showing considerable wear, surface discoloration, and patination on both metallic components, consistent with its likely 19th-century period. The original bluing or browning on the steel barrel is largely worn, revealing a mottled grey patina. The brass or bronze frame exhibits heavy patination, minor surface scratches, and some small dings. Engraving details are visible but softened by wear. The checkered pattern on the butt shows commensurate wear.
