Description
An Allen & Thurber style four-barreled percussion pepperbox pistol, likely dating to the 1837 patent period, retailed by A.W. Spies. The pistol features a fixed barrel block with fluted sides and an exposed central hammer. It is constructed primarily of dark, oxidized metal, with a wooden grip that includes an oval-shaped inlay on each side, likely bone or mother-of-pearl. Decorative scroll engravings are present on the metal frame and grip straps. The top strap is marked “A.W. SPIES”.
Condition report:
Significant surface rust and pitting are present on the metal components. The pistol displays a dark patina overall, with wear consistent with age and use. The wooden grip shows commensurate wear.
