Winchester Model 1895 40-72-300 Smokeless Cartridge Box with 11 Rounds (6 Empty Brass Casings)
Description
An antique Winchester Repeating Arms Company cardboard box, originally labeled for ’20 Cartridges’ for the Winchester Model 1895 Repeating Rifle, caliber 40-72-300 Smokeless, with a patent date of ‘Dec 11 ’88.’ The box contains 11 ROUNDS, of which 6 are EMPTY BRASS CASINGS. The light brown cardboard box with its yellowed paper label exhibits significant wear, discoloration, staining, and tearing. Inside, a cardboard tray holds the cartridges. The 11 rounds consist of brass-cased cartridges with lead or jacketed bullets. Visible cartridge headstamps include ‘W.R.A. CO. 40-72 W.C.F.’ and ‘REM-UMC 40-72 W.C.F.’, indicating a mixed set of cartridges. The contents were ‘Manufactured and loaded by the WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY, NEW HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A.’
Condition report:
The cardboard box and paper label are heavily worn, discolored, stained, and torn, consistent with age and handling. The label is significantly degraded, though legible in parts. The cartridges show general tarnish and patina consistent with age. One cartridge appears to have a struck or missing primer. Fair antique condition.
