Lot 368:
Description
A group of four 1950s Black Americana figures, depicting caricatured Black individuals, commonly associated with ‘Aunt Jemima’ and ‘Uncle Mose’ imagery. This lot comprises four figural objects, three female and one male, dressed in brightly colored attire predominantly in red, black, yellow, and white. The first three figures, from left to right, are crafted from molded plastic or hard rubber with painted details. These include a female figure with hands positioned to hold an object; a second female figure designed as a pitcher or dispenser with a handle on her back and holding a tray, marked “TRADE MARK REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.” and “PAT. NO. D-97064” (a U.S. design patent granted in 1935); and a male figure holding a top hat, possibly functioning as a shaker, with an opening on the back of his head. The leftmost female and the male figure bear “MADE IN U.S.A.” on their bases and include stoppers. The fourth figure, a female coin bank with a visible slot on her back, appears to be made of painted cast iron or a similar heavy metal.
Condition report:
The three plastic figures are in good condition with minor surface wear consistent with age and use. The painted cast iron bank exhibits significant paint loss and chipping, revealing the dark base material.
