A Winchester Model 1873 lever-action repeating rifle, featuring a 24″ barrel and an early four-digit serial number. The rifle is characterized by its blued metal components, including the barrel, receiver, and operating lever, complemented by a dark stained wooden buttstock and forend. Visible markings include “MODEL. 1873.” on the upper tang, “WINCHESTER’S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN, CT.” on the barrel, along with patent dates “KING’S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866, OCTOBER 16. 1860”. The serial number “1896 O” is present on the lower tang. A brass carrier block is visible within the action, and the buttplate appears to be of aged metal. The bore is bright with good groves, and pitting is present. Caliber .38.
